drama tranquilo
This summer, I returned to Portugal wanting to experience a very different side of the country. Having spent considerable time south of Lisbon, I chose to follow the Atlantic coast north, travelling through tHE CHIC CITY OF Cascais to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Portugal, and onward to the dramatic Praia Grande and the BEACHES ALONG sintras shore.

Drama Tranquilo—“tranquil drama”—became the natural title for the series. It reflects the contrasts I encountered along the coast: dramatic cliffs and seascapes, a beautiful bay filled with bathers, and then moments when everything suddenly becomes quiet and still. Nature sets its own pace, and within that rhythm I witnessed a calm, almost hidden energy held within the landscape.
BACK TO CLASSIC FILM
I deliberately photographed the series on classic Kodak colour-negative film using a fixed-lens half-frame camera. The softness, grain and imperfections of the film give the images a timeless, nostalgic quality, allowing the photographs to retain the feeling of real moments rather than becoming overly polished.
The resulting images are less a record of a journey than a collection of impressions—light, colour, movement and stillness.
The Atlantic landscape can feel powerful and dramatic one moment, and deeply peaceful the next.

AUTHEnTICITY
After more than three decades of photographing around the world, I continue to be drawn to moments that feel authentic and unplanned. Drama Tranquilo is my personal interpretation of this stretch of Portugal: dramatic yet serene, energetic yet still, and ultimately defined by the quiet force of nature.
